The Saxon Triangle

The Saxon Triangle is a metro region in the German state of Saxony. It is made up of five cities and the many towns within the triangle. With a population of 3,200,000, the Saxon Triangle is among the top 20 Metro areas in Europe.

The Five major cities in the Saxon Triangle are: Dresden, Leipzig, Chemnitz, Halle and Zwickau. Some other important cities in the Triangle are: Altenburg, Freiberg, Meißen, Pirna, and Riesa. Geographically, it is between Berlin to the north and Prague to the south, and about 100 km from the Polish border to the east.

While Germany as a whole has about 38% of the population who declare themselves to have no religion, in the state of Saxony over 70% do so. In fact, the most common religious designation is that of “Atheist.” Saxony and the neighboring states in Germany have more historic church buildings than almost any other area on Earth. In spite of that, almost all of them are relegated to little more than museum status.

As an area within the former GDR, the Saxon Triangle has high unemployment, a high rate of young emigration, and little opportunity. Combine that with the desperate state of spirituality and the hopelessness of many is understandable.

The young people of Saxony don’t know where to turn to find meaning in life. Paranormal curiosity is on the rise. Extremist racial groups and political parties designated as Neo-Nazis have seen more success here than anywhere else in Germany. While they are strongly opposed by the majority, they still have an influence on the young and cause fear among immigrant populations in the state.

“Hope for Saxony” is cooperating with the local Baptist churches in Dresden and other cities to bring hope and the Good News of Jesus Christ to the people of the Saxon Triangle!
