Leipzig is an important commercial center in Germany. It hosts important trade fairs of a variety of industries throughout the year. It was the city where J. S. Bach worked in the Thomaskirche, and in GDR times, the weekly prayer meetings at the Nikolaikirche helped bring down the communist government. It has long been a center of publishing in Europe, and today is the media center for Central Germany.
