Chemnitz is the third largest city of the Saxon Triangle, about half as large as Leipzig or Dresden. During the GDR time it was known as Karl Marx Stadt, and it was extensively rebuilt in the Marxist model of city planning. Chemnitz is truly a place desperate for hope. With the current post-reunification problems hitting Chemnitz hard, people are in search of answers. In 2006 Chemnitz had the dubious distinction of having the lowest birth-rate in the world.
