Dresden is the capitol of Saxony, with 500,000 plus in population, it is tied with Leipzig as the largest city in the state. Dresden is one of just a couple cities in the former East Germany that are experiencing growth. It has grown every year since the year 2000. It is located in the beautiful and world-renowned Elbe River Valley. During the days of the GDR, it was known as “the city of the ignorant” as it was unable to receive any TV signals from West Germany. Today it is a cultural center of the arts and a popular tourist destination. Important surrounding towns in the Dresden metro area are Meißen, Kamenz, Bautzen, Freiberg, and Radeburg. About 80% of Dresdeners are non-religious or Atheist.

There are only 25 non-state run churches in the city (one of which is Baptist). The total number of people attending these free churches represent less than half of one percent of the population.
